Weight gain has never been a cause of worry for some, but for the rest, is a big issue that needs attention. Though the most common causes for sudden increase in weight  are changes in diet or activity. But sometimes, it is also caused by some physical illness. Like if within 6 months, your weight increases for about 5 to 10 percent (7 1/2 to 15 pounds for a 150-pound person, or 3.4 to 6.8 kilograms for a 68-kilogram person), then certainly there is some problem. It becomes necessary for you to talk to your health practitioner, if you gain weight rapidly and cannot point out any single reason.

Causes for weight gain:

1. dietary changes

This includes an increased intake of alcohol or soda, a new favorite high-fat food like ice-cream, sweets, fried foods, increase in snacking, fast foods or prepared foods.

2. loss of activity

Lack of movement due to some injury, shifting of an active job to a passive one, a change in routine like using stairs, walking to work and so on.

3. New medication

Sometimes, shifting to some new medication may result in a sudden weight gain. Some antidepressants and some hormones, such as estrogen, progesterone and cortisone, may result into weight gain.

4. Mood changes

Extreme anxiety, stress and depression can also affect activity and food intake.

5. Fluid retention

There are certain medical conditions like heart or kidney failure or thyroid conditions that may result into fluid buildup or fluid retention. Your body may start swelling due to excessive fluid inside your body. Some symptoms are :- puffiness of the tissues, swelling of the ankless as the day progresses, unusual shortness of breath, increase in visits to the bathroom during night.

To conclude, bring these healthy changes to your lifestyle and wait for sometime after considering the above discussed points, and even if you don't get benefited, then its the time to see your doctor.
