Sun Exposure Lowers Cancer Risk, Latest Researches Say
An exposure to sunlight can reduce the risk of various cancers. Yes!! A new study has confirmed this fact. It has found that, people who are exposed to sunlight for more time develop a lower risk of getting a severe form of cancer. It followed more than 450,000 whites and non-Hispanic subjects who were aged between 50-71 years from diverse geographic parts of the nation, US. The experts co-related the calculated ultra-violet radiation exposure with the incidence of different kinds of cancer. The various places included are California, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina and the metropolitan parts of Atlanta and Detroit. The researchers followed these areas for nine years and excluded other risk factors for cancer like smoking, body mass index (BMI) and physical activity.
This is first study in its kind which established a positive link between sunlight exposure and the prevention of various types of cancers.
Study that established the fact that sun exposure reduces cancer risk
In this study, around 75,000 participants contracted cancer. It found that around 12 types of cancers got reduced in the people who were exposed to sunlight. This included the cancers of lungs, prostate, colon, thyroid and many more. However, melanoma and other skin cancers occurred more in the people who were exposed to sunlight for a longer time. And the negative effect of females organs were also not reduced. It included ovaries, breasts and uterus. This fact was established probably because men spend more time in sunlight than women.
This study has also confirmed the positive effect of vitamin D on the body of the participants. This nutrient is beneficial for the immune system, promotes bone growth and prevents the occurrence of various cardiovascular diseases. It also underlined the fact that, the exposure to sun is protective and the use of a sunscreen is counterproductive. It means that the use of sunscreen is good when you stay for prolonged periods of time under the sun. But, otherwise the exposure to sun is healthy for your body.
